Tumblr's Latest Shutdown Scare
In light of the new shutdown scare going around the userbase I'd like to remind everyone that if tumblr shuts down it was not the userbase's fault in the slightest.
Social media sites are very expensive, and the idea that we should've kept giving money to the website that had been making extremely unpopular decisions ever since it was bought by automatic (and before that too, the porn ban is infamous for a reason) is morally and ethically disgusting to me. It was going to go downhill no matter what we did, because even twitter has been struggling and struggling for years to ever see a single cent in profits. They added tumblr TV, removed QoL from clicking images on mobile and added a godawful swipe to a new post feature that is way too easy to do on accident, adding a fucking for you page to copy tiktok when no one on tumblr uses tumblr expecting it to be like tiktok (and those that do have been coddled by every platform copying it way too much), they revamped the whole feel of a blogging platform to look like fucking twitter and people hated it so bad one of the most popular things was a reversion of the change, they made the mobile app so much more boring and load slower, they removed being able to see someone's custom blog colors in dms, they even fucked over the people who WERE giving them money by saying "fuck you! adfree is more expensive now", and they were stealing and making merch off of tumblr born memes, sometimes doing it RIGHT AFTER it started which is what happened with vanilla extract!
Tumblr's merch store was genuinely so insidious, I'm so glad it was generally unpopular and they stopped doing it. Because if they hadn't we probably would have seen them deal out their transmisogynist moderation (which we know one of the mods was accepting bribes to do asp btw) and then they would've post-mortem stole whoever they banned's posts to sell for money after they ruined her social life. Which is so much worse than stealing from and profiting off of a userbase that is generally very poor and not even give the option of royalties.
Matt doesn't understand why we like tumblr, he never will. He has been backed into a corner and forced to throw spaghetti at the wall to make something, anything stick. He does not deserve your sympathy, he will never have mine after what he's done, his bad choices have been tainting wordpress too, one of the reasons why dreamwidth was always the better option to me. The CEO of this website at least does not harass trans women and stalk them to other platforms to threaten them and then gladly get coddled by the transmisogynist group of users who gloat about having a transmisogyny group chat.
Tumblr was always going to shut down one day, it's a very expensive cockroach, the fact that it's survived nearly 20 years in an age where many beloved titans of the internet have fallen is admirable. However, nothing lasts forever. Whenever it does go, I'm not sure there will be any social media for me, quite frankly I hate them all right now. Most are either privacy invading menaces (thanks lackluster US privacy laws) or twitter clones (WHY) that don't even improve on twitter. Bluesky seems like the best option but has already had a transmisogynist-tier fuck up in its moderation, I mean how in the world do you "just happen" to have a moderation error that bans transwomen for "CP" and then one of the people trying to calm ppl down is sort of clearly trying to impersonate being on bluesky admin team and saying with such a disgusting amount of confidence that every ban laid out was valid. It's very clear to me that Bluesky's moderation functioned partly on a mass reports = must be true kind of logic, considering these "errors" happened right when a libsofbluesky account changed hands and started posting.
Regardless my point is that I have no reason to trust these websites right now, anything that is good right now is either not moderated well, or has no users. I may open up a mailing list or something in the future using my melonland account, so people can keep up with me in a manner that isn't just an RSS feed on my neocities. We'll see.
